About the Unity of the Brethren
The Unity of the Brethren has its beginnings in Bohemia in the 1400s. On July 6, 1415 Jan Hus was martyred for his beliefs that the Bible should be in common language of the people and that the cup should be available to all believers. He was excommunicated, condemned, and burned at the stake. His followers formed the Unitas Fratum in 1457. Under heavy persecution, many of them fled to Poland, some to Germany, and others continued to worship in secret. In the 1850, a group migrated to America. They organized their first church in 1864, in Wesley, Texas, where the original painted church still stands today. In 1903, several congregations united to form the Unity of the Brethren. The Hussites were the first Protestant Christians. Their influence is seen in the reformative teachings of Martin Luther, John Calvin, Comenius, and many other reformative leaders. The Brethren have a rich history of preaching the Word and loving the people since 1415, and that tradition continues. To learn more about our denomination, please visit www.unityofthebrethren.org.
About Youth Programs
The Brethren Youth Fellowship (BYF) is for youth ages 12-21 who are active in their local congregations. Local BYF groups are involved in worship, Bible study, fellowship, service, and outreach in their churches and communities throughout the state of Texas.
Local BYF groups join together for retreats, socials, service projects, and mission work throughout the year. For a list of upcoming State BYF activities, check out the activity page.
About Summer Camps
Summer Camping Programs for children and youth ages 7-19 are offered at the Hus School Encampment in Caldwell each summer. These camps are organized weekly by age so that children and youth can learn in a family-style environment among peers. The structure of our programs leads to a maximum of 6 to 1 camper/counselor ratio with numerous other support staff so that campers can have personal attention and grow spiritually in a small group setting. For more information about our summer camping programs, visit www.huscamp.org.
About Children's Programs
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me." Children are always welcome at church and are the future of our denomination. A church without the noise of children is a dying church. Local congregations have a variety of children's programs: Sunday school, Wednesday night fellowships, quarterly game nights, Vacation Bible School, etc.
Children from local churches join together at the annual Unity Children's Rally held at the Hus Encampment. This is a one day event with Bible study, games, music, crafts, and more. Check out the Children's page for more information.
